Tak ada yang lebih menyenangkan selain menikmati hasil jerih payah diri sendiri. Tidak ada hal yang lebih mengasyikkan dibandingkan rupiah yang kita petik dari bulir keringat kita sendiri. Ada sensasi luar biasa yang tak mudah diungkapkan dengan kata-kata [memang sedikit lebai sih..]. Itulah yang terasa saat saya menerima gaji untuk kali yang pertama. Jumlahnya memang sangat kecil, jauh dari angka yang fantastis (apalagi dibandingkan dengan nilai dana yang ditilep Gayus :). Namun karena saya memperolehnya saat masih duduk di bangku SMA (awal kelas 3), maka uang sebesar Rp21.000,00 itu amat berarti bagi saya, terlebih saat membelanjakannya. Ya, Rp21.000,00! Di mana Rp14.000,00 saya terima sebagai honor menerjemahkan teks pidato yang merupakan tugas anak SMA sebelah sekolah saya. Dan Rp7.000,00 lagi adalah bayaran karena telah mengajar Noval—anak SD bertubuh subur yang mengikuti les bahasa Inggris di tempat kursus Mbak Ermin—untuk satu kali pertemuan. Saya lupa mengapa akhirnya les itu tidak berlanjut.

Oiya, yang saya maksud dengan kata ‘gaji’ di sini adalah sejumlah uang yang diterima sebagai imbalan atas pekerjaan yang telah dilakukan menurut perjanjian yang sebelumnya telah disepakati oleh kedua belah pihak. Saya merasa perlu menegaskan pengertian ini karena pada saat SMA saya juga menerima uang dalam bentuk lain, antara lain hadiah (dari perlombaan atau kontes) dan honor (untuk suatu ‘pekerjaan’ singkat) yang besarnya tidak ditentukan.

Betapa gembira menerima lembaran rupiah dari kegiatan itu. Dan semua tak lepas dari jasa Mbak Ermin. Saya jujur saja tidak terlalu mengenalnya. Sejak kelas 2 kami para anggota OSIS kerap meminta bantuannya dalam urusa pengetikan laporan atau surat-surat OSIS karena ia mengelola sebuah tempat pengetikan. Ia hanya punya dua buah komputer dan satu printer. Kala itu belum banyak yang memiliki kompter pribadi (PC) seperti sekarang, apalagi notebook/laptop. Maka mengunjungi tempatnya sangatlah mengasyikkan bagi kami anak-anak kampung yang katroknya minta maaf. Rental pengetikan itu berlokasi di kota, tak jauh dari sekolah kami. Selain menyediakan jasa rental komputer/pengetikan, ia juga mengelola kursus bahasa Inggris.

Memasuki jenjang kelas 3 ayah saya meninggal dunia karena sakit. Dan entah karena iba melihat wajah saya (yang ganteng tapi ga pernah nyadar) atau murni kebaikan hatinya, maka Mbak Ermin menawarkan pekerjaan lepas kepada saya, yakni mengajar bahasa Inggris untuk anak-anak di tempat kursusnya. Saya tentu saja langsung mengiyakan, walaupun masih tak yakin tentang kemampuan anak bernama Noval ini. Saya memang cuma ‘mampu’ dalam bahasa Inggris, mengingat saya memang amat menyukai mata pelajaran ini sejak kelas 2 SMP. Maka segera setelah saya bilang ‘OK’, ia lalu memberikan coaching singkat sebelum saya betul-betul terjun meng-handle si Noval yang lucu itu. Esoknya, saya langsung meluncur ke toko tradisional untuk membeli buku bekal. Tipis dan murah, hanya berisi daftar kata-kata bahasa Inggris sederhana.

Alhamdulillah, pertemuan pertama (dan akhirnya menjadi pertemuan terakhir) berjalan lancar dan sangat menyenangkan. Sungguh pengalaman yang berharga, mengajar anak-anak untuk kali pertama yang sering mengajukan pertanyaan. Beberapa hari sebelumnya Mbak Ermin menerima dua lembar teks pidato yang harus diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Saya mengangguk saja sewaktu ditawari untuk menerjemahkan. Saya sedikit yakin karena sejak lulus SMP saya gemar menulis surat ke sejumlah kedutaan besar di Jakarta untuk mempraktikkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris sekaligus meminta ‘sesuatu’. Kapan-kapan akan saya ceritakan.

Itulah kali pertama terjemahan saya (dengan penuh kepedean) yang dihargai oleh orang lain dengan lembaran rupiah. Jadilah dua puluh satu ribu rupiah itu menjadi saksi akan indahnya bekerja dan menerima upah. Saya tak ingat betul untuk apa gaji pertama tersebut saya belanjakan. Barangkali untuk membeli kamus John M Echol (bajakan) atau untuk menyantap nasi bungkus Cak To di depan sekolah dengan aneka gorengan dan jahe panas yang sangat sedap. Berapa pun nilai gaji pertama, tentu ia tergurat manis dalam kenangan. Bagaimana dengan sobat, kapan dan berapa gaji pertamamu?

Saya lupa kapan dpt gaji pertama tapi yg saya ingat bagaimana perjuangan saya setiap kali ini memiliki sesuatu mesti harus menabung krn saya tak pernah meminta ingin dibelikan. saya selalu berusaha utk bisa membeli sndiri dan ktika ingin punya HP saya mesti mngumpulkan uang hingga lbh dari 8 bulan baru bsa beli dan itu mnyenangkan krn saya mampu 🙂

    1. Memang demikian harusnya. Menabung memiliki dampak efektif dan semangat yg positif dalam mendidik diri sendiri. Ada kepuasan mendalam tatkala kita akhirnya berhasil memiliki sesuatu yang kita impikan setelah kita tahan dalam kesabaran. Saya pun demikian. Cuma waktu itu ponsel perta,justru saya dapat tanpa menabung. Melainkan pemberian dari seorang teman, haha. sungguh beruntung ya! Ya walaupun tidak secara langsung, hehe.
